In ASTM A240, types 316 and 316L are chromium-nickel austenitic steels. The addition of molybdenum enhances the corrosion resistance of stainless steel, making 316/316L more corrosion resistant than 304/304L. The low carbon content in 316L steel slightly reduces its strength compared to 316, but sometimes they are nearly indistinguishable. Additionally, 316L is preferred for welding because of its lower carbon content.

Applications of ASTM A240 316/316L
316/316L steel exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in both atmospheric and oxidizing environments, including marine atmospheres, even in welded conditions. Typically, 316/316L steels are non-magnetic when annealed, though cold drawing or rolling can impart slight magnetism, which can be rectified with further processing. These steels are utilized in environments exposed to saltwater, sulfuric acid, chloride, petrochemicals, and high heat. Common applications include tanks, supports, frames, enclosures, housings, and engine and motor components.
