ASTM A312 TP 316L Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe

A312 TP316L is a low carbon austenitic stainless steel. A312 TP316L is manufactured with a superior composition of nickel, chromium and molybdenum, which allows it to be used in a variety of industries. This gives items in this grade superior corrosion and oxidation resistance properties. The grade covers standard seamless, welded, ERW, EFW and cold drawn piping components. The ASME SA312 Gr 316L seamless pipe is a pressure vessel component designed for use in high temperature and pressure applications. These tubes are produced by passing hot steel billets through an extrusion die to precisely shape the material to the correct dimensions. This SA312 Grade 316L Seamless Tube is slightly more expensive due to the material used in its manufacture; however, the grade has excellent load carrying capacity and strength as there are no welds or seams on the surface of these tubes. ASTM A312 TP316L cold drawn seamless tubes are manufactured shortly after the hot rolling process. Processed at room temperature, these tubes are drawn over dies, giving these tubes improved strength and surface finish compared to ordinary steel grades.

These seamless pipes are highly resistance to chloride corrosion and therefore the 316l Stainless Steel Pipe resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion even under chloride rich environments. Our Stainless Steel Pipe 316l Seamless products can be used in boats, marine applications, sea water purification systems and in waste water management applications as well. There are different schedules of the pipes to accommodate different diameters and wall thicknesses. The Stainless Steel Pipe 316l Schedule 40 is a medium range pressure containment capacity whereas the Stainless Steel Pipe 316l Schedule 10s has comparatively smaller wall thickness. Our 316l Seamless Pipe Schedule 40 Pipe are one of the most used in the oil & gas industries. Our electric resistant welded SS 316l Erw Pipe is stronger and can last longer. The advantage of 316l Welded Pipe is that it is easy to weld with or without filler materials. C&N also supply Square Pipe 316l which could be used for extra strength in structural applications. Why is SS 316L pipe suitable for use in the marine industry and at temperatures of up to 850ºC?

Grade 316L is an austenitic stainless steel that can operate from approximately 450 degrees Celsius to 850 degrees Celsius. The range varies depending on the pressure of a system, the components flowing inside the pipe and the environment outside. The marine environment is full of chloride ions and the wind and water are salty.

The salty conditions catalyse all forms of corrosion as they act as a medium for electron transfer for oxidation and reduction chemical reactions. The 316L stainless steel pipe has a lower carbon content than ASTM A312 TP316, which means there is less intergranular precipitation and localised corrosion due to welding. The material also contains molybdenum, in addition to chromium and nickel, which is particularly resistant to chloride ion stress corrosion.

These properties make the pipe resistant to crevice and pitting corrosion under chloride ions. As the marine environment is full of chloride ions, the SS 316L pipe material is resistant to chloride ion corrosion and has an operating temperature range up to approximately 850 degrees Celsius (1550F to be exact), the combination of which makes the pipes suitable for piping projects in the marine industry and temperatures up to 850 degrees Celsius.
