Stainless steel is often referred to as corrosion resistant steel – it does not stain, corrode or rust as easily as ordinary carbon steel. However, it would be misleading to say that it is corrosion resistant. It differs significantly from standard carbon steel due to the amount of chromium present, which limits surface corrosion, unlike carbon steel which will rust when exposed to air and any moisture in the atmosphere. Due to its anti-oxidation properties, stainless steel is often a popular solution.

Stainless steel seamless (SMLS) tube is formed by drawing a solid billet over a piercing bar to create the hollow shell. As there is no welding involved in the manufacturing process, seamless tubes are considered to be stronger and more reliable. Historically, seamless pipe has been considered to withstand pressure better than other types and has often been more available than welded pipe.

310 is a medium carbon austenitic stainless steel for high temperature applications such as furnace parts and heat treatment equipment. It is used at temperatures up to 1150°C in continuous service and 1035°C in intermittent service. Grade 310S is a low carbon version of Grade 310.
