Custom 450®,Stainless Steel 450 Alloy(UNS S45000)

Custom 450® (UNS S45000) is a high-strength martensitic stainless steel with good corrosion resistance and excellent toughness. The corrosion resistance of Custom 450® (UNS S45000) is comparable to that of 304 stainless steel, while its strength level is close to that of 410 stainless steel. In the annealed condition, its yield strength reaches 689 MPa or higher, and it is easy to machine, hot form, and cold form. Compared with conventional martensitic stainless steels, Custom 450® has a lower tendency toward brittleness and is easier to weld. It is widely used in aerospace, petrochemical, nuclear power, marine engineering, and medical devices. Custom 450® (UNS S45000) is a martensitic stainless steel with a chemical composition containing 14–16% chromium, 5–7% nickel, 0.5–1.0% molybdenum, and 1.25–1.75% copper. The combination of these alloying elements gives Custom 450® (UNS S45000) good corrosion resistance and tensile strength. Moreover, due to the presence of nickel and appropriate amounts of molybdenum and copper, Custom 450® offers superior corrosion resistance compared to ordinary martensitic steels (such as 410). At the same time, the stable passive film formed by its high chromium content provides reliable performance in mildly corrosive environments and salt water.

Custom 450® Stainless Steel Format Options

Magellan Metals provides specialized stainless steel alloy 450® in the following forms:

  • Wire
  • Bar
  • Sheet/Plate
  • Tube
  • Forgings
  • Weld Rod

Physical Properties

Properties  MetricImperial
Density  7.80 cm³0.282  Ib/in³

Custom 450® has a yield strength of ≥689 MPa and a tensile strength of ≥860 MPa, with a density of approximately 7.80 g/cm³. It is typically heat treated by annealing. This material is magnetic in all heat-treated conditions, which is a typical characteristic of martensitic stainless steels. This property provides special value in certain engineering applications, such as magnetic drive pumps, magnetic induction sensors, magnetic holding devices, and equipment requiring electromagnetic shielding. Compared with the weak magnetism of austenitic stainless steels (such as 304), the magnetism of Custom 450® makes it easier to control in certain inspection and assembly processes.

Advantages of Custom 450® Stainless Steel Alloy

Custom 450® stainless steel is a martensitic, age-hardened alloy. It is highly corrosion-resistant, similar to 304 stainless steel, yet it maintains a strength level similar to that of 410 stainless steel. Like other types of martensitic age-hardenable stainless steels, UNS S45000 450® stainless steel can be easily machined, hot-worked, and cold formed. Additional benefits include:

  • Good corrosion resistance
  • Moderate strength
  • Higher yield strength than 304
  • Higher corrosion resistance than 410
