Product Overview

Aerospace components withstand alternating loads and extreme temperature changes; petrochemical and nuclear equipment operates in corrosive media; marine structures are exposed to seawater erosion; medical devices require strict standards for safety and hygiene.

Custom 455® (UNS S45500) is a martensitic age-hardenable stainless steel developed for high-end severe working conditions. It combines ultra-high strength, reliable corrosion resistance and excellent workability, outperforming conventional martensitic stainless steels and serving as a premium alloy for advanced industrial applications.

Core Performance Advantages

Custom 455® offers corrosion resistance comparable to 304 austenitic stainless steel, suitable for atmospheric and mildly corrosive environments. It has higher strength and better toughness than regular martensitic grades such as 410 and 420. Compared with Custom 450®, it reaches an ultra-high strength level.

The material is easy to machine, hot/cold form and weld with low embrittlement risk. Its simple aging heat treatment can greatly improve mechanical properties, ensuring convenient production and fabrication.

Heat Treatment, Machining & Welding Guidelines

Heat Treatment

Solution Annealing: Heat to 1000~1060°C and hold sufficiently, then cool by air or water. The material obtains low hardness and good ductility for further processing.

Age Hardening: Hold annealed parts at 480~538°C for 3 to 4 hours, then air cool. Precipitation strengthening is achieved while retaining good toughness.

Processing Notes

  1. Machining: Excellent machinability in solution annealed condition. Use carbide tools with standard parameters. Reduce cutting speed and feed rate and apply sufficient coolant after aging treatment.
  2. Welding: GTAW (TIG) and GMAW (MIG) are recommended. Complete welding before aging. Low-temperature preheating is recommended. Post-weld aging treatment restores strength and prevents intergranular corrosion and cracking. Oxyacetylene welding is not allowed.

FAQ

1.Q: Is Custom 455® magnetic? A: Yes, it is magnetic as a martensitic stainless steel.

2.Q: Will welding reduce material strength? A: Welding causes local strength loss. Post-weld aging treatment can restore full performance.

3.Q: Can it replace 304 stainless steel? A: Similar corrosion resistance, much higher strength. It is ideal for applications requiring both corrosion resistance and ultra-high strength.

4.Q: What delivery conditions are available? A: Solution annealed and aged conditions are available as per customer requirements.
