Custom 465® (UNS S46500) is a premium vacuum-melted martensitic precipitation-hardening (PH) stainless steel, compliant with ASTM A564 and AMS 5936 industry specifications. Developed as an upgraded high-performance alternative to traditional PH grades such as 15-5 PH, PH 13-8 Mo and Custom 455, this alloy balances ultra-high tensile strength, outstanding fracture toughness, and corrosion resistance comparable to conventional 304 stainless steel.
Featuring a refined low-carbon, nickel-rich alloy formulation without excessive chromium carbide precipitation, UNS S46500 eliminates the typical strength-toughness trade-off of standard precipitation-hardening stainless steels. It delivers exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and notch fatigue under extreme loads, making it ideal for critical components serving aerospace, medical, marine, oil & gas, and high-precision industrial fields.
Different from common martensitic stainless steels, Custom 465® achieves customizable mechanical properties through precise aging heat treatment, covering multiple strength grades from medium to ultra-high strength, and maintains stable structural performance in harsh cyclic load and corrosive environments.

Note: The ultra-low carbon design prevents intergranular corrosion and welding brittleness. The optimized Ni-Mo-Ti composite precipitation system enables uniform nano-scale precipitate distribution after aging treatment, which greatly improves matrix strength, toughness and stress corrosion resistance, outperforming traditional PH stainless steel grades.

3. Heat Treatment & Mechanical Properties
3.1 Heat Treatment Process
Custom 465® (S46500) products are delivered in solution-annealed condition, supporting flexible customized aging treatment to meet diverse strength requirements. Standard processing procedures: Solution treatment at 815~845℃ with air cooling; Aging treatment includes H900, H950, H1000 and H1050 conditions for graded strength matching. All thermal processing complies with AMS industry standards, with complete heat treatment reports and mechanical test certificates provided for each batch.
3.2 Typical Room-Temperature Mechanical Properties
- H900 Condition: Tensile Strength ≥1310 MPa; Yield Strength ≥1210 MPa; Elongation ≥16%; Hardness ≈40 HRC
- H950 Condition: Tensile Strength ≥1720 MPa; Yield Strength ≥1650 MPa; Elongation ≥12%; Hardness ≈48 HRC
- H1050 Over-aged Condition: Tensile Strength ≥1310 MPa; Yield Strength ≥1100 MPa; Elongation ≥18%; Excellent SCC resistance
- Fracture Toughness: 88~99 MPa·m¹ᐟ², maintaining high toughness under ultra-high strength state
3.3 Physical Characteristics
Density: 7.80 g/cm³; Average linear expansion coefficient (20~300℃): 10.8×10⁻⁶/℃. With moderate thermal conductivity and low thermal deformation rate, UNS S46500 features excellent dimensional stability after heat treatment, suitable for precision machining, grinding, fine forging and additive manufacturing processes.

4.1 Ultra-High Strength with Balanced Toughness
Custom 465® achieves a maximum tensile strength up to 1758 MPa (255 ksi), far exceeding conventional martensitic and precipitation-hardening stainless steels. Different from other high-strength PH grades that sacrifice toughness for hardness, it retains excellent fracture toughness and notch tensile performance, effectively avoiding brittle fracture under high load and impact conditions.
4.2 Superior Corrosion & SCC Resistance
Its general corrosion resistance is equivalent to Type 304 stainless steel, and it exhibits outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking and pitting corrosion in atmospheric, freshwater, mild chloride and industrial corrosive environments. The over-aged H1050 condition meets strict SCC service requirements, performing stably in marine damp and mild sour working conditions.
4.3 Excellent Machinability & Dimensional Stability
In solution-annealed state, the alloy presents good softness and machinability for precision turning, milling and drilling. The aging treatment causes negligible dimensional deformation, ensuring high precision tolerance of finished parts. It is highly adaptable to mass production of high-precision structural components.
4.4 High Fatigue & Wear Resistance
With uniform and fine precipitation strengthening phase, UNS S46500 delivers excellent anti-fatigue performance under alternating stress and cyclic load.
