Inconel 601 (Alloy 601 / UNS N06601) – High-Temperature Oxidation & Corrosion Resistant Nickel Alloy

1. Material Overview Inconel 601 (also known as Alloy 601, UNS N06601, W.Nr. 2.4851, GB NS3102) is a solid-solution strengthened austenitic nickel-chromium-iron-aluminum alloy. It is designed for outstanding high-temperature oxidation and corrosion resistance up to 1250°C. Unlike standard Alloy 600, the addition of aluminum in 601 promotes the formation of a tightly adherent dual oxide barrier (Cr₂O₃ + Al₂O₃). This gives the alloy exceptional resistance to cyclic oxidation, spalling, carburization, and nitriding under long-term thermal shock. Our advantage: As a fully integrated Chinese manufacturer with in-house vacuum melting, forging, and pipe extrusion capabilities, we produce fully localized Alloy 601 seamless tubes, forged flanges, butt-weld fittings, threaded parts, plates, bars, and custom furnace components. 1. Material Overview

Inconel 601 (also known as Alloy 601, UNS N06601, W.Nr.

Widely trusted for industrial furnaces, petrochemical reformers, waste incineration, thermal power, and aerospace hot-sections, this is the go-to material for global high-temperature EPC projects.

Compliance Standards: ASTM B163 / B166 / B167 / B564, ASME SB, AMS 5715 / 5870, EN 10095, and GB/T 15007.

2. Inconel 601 Chemical Composition (wt%)

We adopt VIM+VAR double vacuum melting to strictly control impurities and maximize high-temperature strength and weldability.

ElementSpecification (wt%)Role in Performance
Nickel (Ni)58.00 – 63.00Stabilizes austenite, ensures high-temperature toughness
Chromium (Cr)21.00 – 25.00Resists sulfidation and moderate corrosion
Aluminum (Al)1.00 – 1.70Forms stable alumina scale; prevents cyclic oxidation spalling
Carbon (C)≤ 0.10Low carbon avoids intergranular carbide embrittlement
Manganese (Mn)≤ 1.00
Silicon (Si)≤ 0.50
Copper (Cu)≤ 1.00
Phosphorus (P)≤ 0.020Stricter control eliminates hot cracking in forging/welding
Sulfur (S)≤ 0.015Stricter control eliminates hot cracking in forging/welding

3. Heat Treatment & Mechanical Properties

3.1 Standard Heat Treatment

All products are supplied in the solution-annealed condition:

  • Temperature: 1120 – 1175°C
  • Holding Time: 30 min to 2 hours (based on wall thickness)
  • Cooling: Forced air or water rapid quench

Optional stress relief (760 – 870°C, 1–4 hours) is available for complex welded assemblies. Every shipment comes with complete heat charts, PMI reports, and mechanical test certificates compliant with PED & ASME pressure vessel codes.

3.2 Alloy 601 Room-Temperature Mechanical Properties (Annealed)

PropertyMinimum Value
Ultimate Tensile Strength≥ 655 MPa
0.2% Offset Yield Strength≥ 240 MPa
Elongation (50mm gauge)≥ 30%
Brinell Hardness≤ 215 HB
Charpy V-notch Impact Toughness≥ 120 J

3.3 Physical & High-Temperature Data of UNS N06601

PropertyValue
Density8.11 g/cm³
Melting Range1320 – 1370°C
Mean Linear Expansion (20–1000°C)14.1 × 10⁻⁶ /°C
Thermal Conductivity (RT)11.6 W/m·K
Max. Continuous Service Temp. (Oxidation)1175°C
Max. Intermittent Service Temp.1250°C
100h Creep Rupture Strength @ 1000°C≥ 25 MPa

Low thermal expansion minimizes deformation, and the uniform grain structure prevents coarsening after thousands of hours at peak temperature – making it perfect for cyclic furnace operations.

4. Core Performance Advantages

  • Superior Cyclic Oxidation & Anti-Spalling: The Cr+Al dual protective layer remains bonded to the base metal. After 1008 hours of static oxidation at 1095°C, metal loss is only 0.067 mm – service life is over 50% longer than Alloy 600 or 310S. Ideal for intermittent burners and flue ducts.
  • Strong Anti-Carburization & Anti-Nitriding: Effectively blocks carbon and nitrogen penetration. In 100-hour carburizing tests at 1000°C, carbon pickup is just 10 mg/cm². A top choice for radiant tubes and charging baskets in carburizing/nitriding furnaces.
  • Long-Term Creep Stability: The solid-solution matrix maintains structural integrity under sustained high-temperature load. Zero permanent creep deformation for reformer furnace tubes and header flanges, with better cost-performance than Haynes 230.
  • Exceptional Thermal Fatigue Resistance: Endures over 12,000 thermal cycles without crack initiation, drastically reducing maintenance on expansion joints and transition sections.
  • Mature Domestic Supply Chain: Full localized production from melting to NDT, matched with ERNiCrFe-11 welding wire (low crack sensitivity, no stringent preheat needed on site). Certifications include ISO9001, PED, NACE MR0175, AS9100, significantly cutting delivery times compared to imports.
