1. Material Overview
A-21® (UNS S41429) is a high-performance modified martensitic stainless steel compliant with ASTM A217 / ASME SA217 standards. Classified as an advanced Super 13Cr grade, it serves as an upgraded alternative to conventional 414-series martensitic stainless steels and is specially engineered for high-pressure, high-temperature, and sour corrosive service conditions in the oil & gas and petrochemical industries.
With a precisely controlled low-carbon formula and optimized Ni-Mo composite alloying design, UNS S41429 retains the superior strength and wear resistance of traditional martensitic steel while greatly improving resistance to sulfide stress corrosion cracking (SSCC). It is widely manufactured into precision cast valve bodies, forged pipe fittings, and seamless pressure tubing, fully meeting international specifications for sour service pressure-containing components.
Unlike standard A217 grades such as CA15 and WC9, UNS S41429 is purpose-built for harsh working environments containing hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and chloride ions, delivering far more reliable performance in acidic field conditions.

Note: The ultra-low carbon content effectively eliminates quenching cracking risks common in ordinary 414 stainless steel. The synergistic nickel-molybdenum alloying significantly enhances anti-corrosion performance in sour media, making S41429 superior to conventional UNS S41400 grades.
3. Heat Treatment & Mechanical Properties
3.1 Heat Treatment Process
All UNS S41429 products are delivered in quenched and high-temperature tempered condition to achieve balanced toughness and strength. Standard heat treatment procedure: Solution quenching at 980~1020℃ with oil cooling, followed by high-temperature tempering at 620~680℃ with air cooling. The entire thermal processing is strictly controlled per ASME pressure component standards, with PMI spectroscopy and hardness testing reports provided for each batch.

3.3 Physical Characteristics
Density: 7.78 g/cm³; Average linear expansion coefficient (20~300℃): 11.2×10⁻⁶/℃. Featuring higher thermal conductivity than 316 austenitic stainless steel, UNS S41429 presents excellent formability and stability during hot forging, cold rolling, precision casting and seamless pipe manufacturing.

4.3 Improved Weldability & Processability
The ultra-low-carbon composition effectively avoids cold cracking defects during welding. The grade supports conventional butt welding and fillet welding, with high yield rates in hot pressing, forging and forming processes, greatly reducing production and construction costs.
4.4 Superior Fatigue & Wear Resistance
After precise quenching and tempering treatment, UNS S41429 combines high surface hardness and sufficient low-temperature toughness. It resists alternating loads and pressure pulsation impacts in valve and pipeline systems, extending service life by more than 30% compared with standard 13Cr materials.

We implement a strict five-step quality control procedure: raw material spectral re-inspection → full-process heat treatment temperature control → finished product NDT inspection → hydraulic tightness test → laser marking.

Finished products are free from sand holes, cracks and surface defects. Standard marking includes brand information, UNS S41429 grade, ASTM A217 standard, heat number, dimension and wall thickness, complying with international oil and gas equipment procurement acceptance standards.
