9.Heat treatment

Annealing:Heat uniformly to 1350/1400°F (732/760°C), hold 2–4h then air cool to ambient for HRB 88/90. For lower hardness (HRB 82/87), heat to 1560°F (850°C) with 1–2h hold, furnace cool ≤50°F/h to 1200°F (650°C), then air cool.

Hardening:TRIMRITE suits batch & continuous furnaces. To reach HRC 49/52, heat to 1900°F (1040°C) and quench in oil, forced air or gas. Small parts require 15min holding, large sections up to 1h. Use N₂/Ar (dew point ≤-40°F/-40°C) for shielding; avoid dissociated ammonia to prevent nitriding and poor corrosion resistance.

Tempering:Post-hardening temper at 350/400°F (177/204°C) for 1–2h; temper up to 600°F (316°C) if lower hardness is needed.

10.Workability

Cold Working:The cold forming characteristics of TRIMRITE in operations such as heading, thread rolling, slotting, extrusion, drawing, and flattening are similar to a number of other 400 series martensitic stainless steels. Field trials have shown the cold headability to be only slightly less than 410.

Machinability:TRIMRITE is normally machined in the annealed condition and is similar to 420. Cutting tools must be kept sharp.

A coolant consisting of a chlorinated mineral oil with sulfur should be satisfactory for most machining operations.
