4. Physical Properties (Solution Annealed Condition)

Understanding the physical constants is crucial for design and thermal analysis.

  • Density: 8.36 g/cm³
  • Melting Range: 1332 °C – 1377 °C
  • Modulus of Elasticity: 212 GPa
  • Mean Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (20-100 °C): 11.6 × 10⁻⁶ /°C
  • Thermal Conductivity (at 100 °C): 13.4 W/(m·K)
  • Poisson’s Ratio: 0.31
  • Electrical Resistivity: 1.22 μΩ·m

5. Mechanical Properties at Room Temperature

Guaranteed minimum mechanical values for Alloy 617 in the solution-annealed condition.

PropertyMinimum ValueTypical Range
Ultimate Tensile Strength (Rm)≥680 MPa730 – 770 MPa
0.2% Yield Strength (Rp0.2)≥300 MPa310 – 360 MPa
Elongation (A)≥30%45% – 58% (forgings/tubes)
Hardness≤190 HB / 85 HRB

Core High-Temperature Advantages (vs. Alloy 625 / Inconel 600)

  • Superior Creep Rupture: Withstands 240 MPa load at 850 °C with a long service life, retaining allowable design strength up to 980 °C (ASME permitted).
  • Exceptional Cyclic Oxidation Resistance: The dual Cr/Al oxide layer resists spalling during repeated heating and cooling.
  • Strong Anti-Carburization & Sulfidation: Ideal for aggressive environments like cracking furnaces and waste incinerators.
  • Outstanding Thermal Fatigue Resistance: Less prone to cracking under frequent thermal cycling.

6. Heat Treatment Specification

The standard supply condition for Alloy 617 is solution annealed to ensure optimal ductility and uniform structure.

  • Solution Annealing: Soak at 1175 – 1230 °C followed by rapid air cooling or water quenching. This achieves a single-phase austenitic structure.
  • Stabilization (Optional): Holding at 760 – 980 °C can optimize long-term creep performance. Note: This alloy cannot be age-hardened.
  • Hot Working: The finishing temperature for hot forging or rolling should be ≥950 °C to suppress precipitation of brittle intermetallic phases.

7. Fabrication & Welding Characteristics

Alloy 617 offers excellent manufacturability using standard techniques.

  • Formability: Exhibits high ductility and excellent hot and cold forming characteristics. A re-solution treatment is required after heavy cold working to restore high-temperature mechanical properties.
  • Welding: Readily weldable via GTAW (TIG), SMAW, and SAW processes using matched Alloy 617 filler metals. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required. For thick-walled components in high-temperature service, stress relief at 780 °C may be applied.
  • Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): Standard UT (Ultrasonic Testing) and PT (Liquid Penetrant Testing) are routinely performed to detect surface cracks, laminations, and inclusions.

8. Key Application Industries

Alloy 617 is the material of choice for critical high-temperature components where failure is not an option.

  • Power Generation (Largest Market)
    • Heavy-duty gas turbines: Combustion liners, transition pieces, high-temperature air ducts.
    • 700 °C ultra-supercritical boilers: Superheater and reheater tubes (e.g., Alloy 617B).
    • Gen-IV Nuclear: Hot gas ducts and intermediate heat exchangers for Very High Temperature Reactors (VHTR) operating at 950 °C+.
  • Petrochemical Processing
    • Ethylene cracking furnace radiant coils, ammonia reformer tubes, nitric acid plant piping, and waste incineration high-temperature pipelines.
  • Aerospace & Aviation
    • Aero-engine combustion chambers, afterburner liners, and high-temperature flow guide components.
  • High-Temperature Pressure Vessels
    • Heat exchangers, headers, flanges, elbows, and tees for oxidizing, carburizing, and sulfidizing environments.

9. Alloy 617 vs. Similar Nickel Alloys

  • Alloy 617 vs. Alloy 625 (UNS N06625): Alloy 617 contains cobalt and aluminum, providing vastly superior creep strength and oxidation resistance above 1000 °C. Alloy 625 is preferred for general corrosion resistance in medium-to-low temperature applications.
  • Alloy 617 vs. Inconel 600: Inconel 600 lacks cobalt and has lower molybdenum. Its creep and oxidation resistance degrade significantly above 800 °C compared to Alloy 617.
