Key Features and Benefits

  • Exceptional High-Temperature Strength: Offers excellent creep resistance and stress rupture strength from 650°C to 1095°C (1200°F to 2000°F). Ideal for long-term, heavy-load operation at elevated temperatures.
  • Outstanding Oxidation Resistance: Maintains superior static and dynamic oxidation resistance up to 1200°C (2190°F).
  • Proven Corrosion Resistance in Harsh Atmospheres: Remarkable resistance to carburization, nitridation, and sulfidation in aggressive industrial environments.
  • Ambient-Temperature Stability: Possesses good aqueous corrosion resistance and low sensitivity to intergranular corrosion after welding.
  • Excellent Workability: Easily processed using conventional techniques for hot forging, cold forming, machining, and welding. No preheating or post-heating is typically required for welding.
  • Cost-Effective Performance: Provides a compelling cost advantage over high-nickel superalloys while maintaining stable physical and mechanical properties across a wide temperature range.

ALLOY HR-120 Chemical Composition

The synergistic effect of high chromium, nickel, and multiple strengthening elements gives ALLOY HR-120 its robust property profile. High chromium forms a dense, protective oxide scale, while molybdenum, tungsten, niobium, and nitrogen provide the solid-solution strengthening that underpins the alloy’s high-temperature creep performance. The nickel matrix enhances carburization and chloride corrosion resistance.

ALLOY HR-120 (UNS N08120) Heat Treatment, Fabrication, and Welding

Solution Annealing

ALLOY HR-120 cannot be hardened by quenching or aging; only solution annealing is used to optimize its properties. Aging treatments are not applicable and may cause harmful intermetallic precipitation. This annealed state is the standard delivery condition, maximizing ductility, weldability, and high-temperature performance.

  • Standard Temperature: 1180°C (2150°F), with a recommended range of 1150–1200°C.
  • Holding Time: Approximately 1 hour per 25 mm (1 inch) of section thickness.
  • Cooling: Forced air cooling or water quenching.
  • Purpose: Fully dissolves carbides and secondary phases to form a uniform single-phase solid solution.

Hot Forging and Forming

  • Forging Temperature Range: 980 – 1180°C (1800 – 2150°F).
  • The alloy exhibits excellent forgeability and resists cracking during hot working. Finish forging above 980°C to prevent cold cracking.

Cold Working

  • Cold forming is readily achievable, though the alloy’s moderate work-hardening rate requires higher forming pressure.
  • A solution anneal is recommended after heavy cold working to restore full ductility and relieve residual stresses.

Welding

  • Compatible Processes: SMAW, GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), and resistance welding.
  • Filler Metal: Use a matching filler metal with equivalent composition for best results.
  • Preheat & Post-heat: Not required. The alloy demonstrates good weldability without post-weld embrittlement and has a low sensitivity to intergranular corrosion in the as-welded condition.

Machining

Conventional tools and equipment can be used. The material in its annealed condition offers stable machinability. To achieve an optimal surface finish, proper cutting parameters and adequate cooling are recommended.

Industrial Applications

ALLOY HR-120 is trusted across a spectrum of industries where high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance are critical.

  • Industrial Furnaces: High-temperature radiant tubes, furnace muffles, retorts, heat treatment fixtures, roller hearths, and conveyor belts.
  • Petrochemical: Steam methane reformer tube supports, ethylene cracking furnace components, high-temperature reaction vessels, and process piping.
  • Environmental & Waste Incineration: Superheater tubes, flue gas heat exchangers, and desulfurization system components.
  • Power Generation: Land-based gas turbine combustor parts and high-temperature flue gas system components.
  • Mineral Processing: High-temperature roasting equipment and components handling corrosive media.
